BRIEF

Adam Dunigan launched his campaign for U.S. Congress in January 2026. Ahead of the public launch, he engaged me to develop a complete visual identity for the campaign. This included logo design, overall brand direction, and a suite of core campaign materials, including poster design and supporting assets.

During our initial conversations, Adam expressed a desire for the campaign to feel distinctly homegrown—grounded, earnest, and rooted in place. He was drawn to the visual language of historic American political campaigns, particularly the Kennedy for President era, and to imagery that could evoke urgency and collective action while reflecting the current moment. He also wanted the brand to feel unmistakably tied to Northern Virginia, the district in which he is running.

In developing the visual direction, I researched campaign signage from the 1950s school integration movement, a particularly resonant reference given that Northern Virginia was home to the first integrated school in the South. I also studied printed materials from JFK’s senatorial and presidential campaigns, paying close attention to their typography, composition, and production qualities. Many of these materials featured heavy, assertive type that was subtly distorted—slanted, waved, or otherwise customized—conveying motion, conviction, and urgency. These typographic characteristics directly informed my type selection and custom adjustments for the campaign.

I also explored symbolic imagery associated with Northern Virginia. While landmarks such as the Pentagon and Arlington Cemetery are deeply recognizable, they are often visually overused in political branding. Instead, I found a more compelling metaphor in the region’s bridges—structures that are both iconic and essential to daily life in Northern Virginia. This led to inspiration drawn from the Key Bridge in Arlington, the oldest road bridge crossing the Potomac and a designated historic landmark. Connecting Virginia to Washington, D.C., the bridge serves as both a literal and symbolic reference point, reinforcing the campaign’s broader message of bridging divides and fostering connection in today’s political and social landscape.
